Good shit from The Economist on Tech’s Game of Thrones.

My favorite analogy in here is Microsoft: “Like the Targaryen family, which used to rule Westeros and now plots in exile to regain the crown, the company is desperate to regain its former glory.” If only Steve Ballmer looked a bit more like Daenerys…

Facebook's Biggest Lockup

I’ve written before about Facebook’s lockup dates. Well their biggest lockup expiration day is here tomorrow. From CNN Money:

It’s déjà vu all over again for Facebook. On Wednesday, the company faces yet another day when millions of shares could hit the market — and this may the biggest potential stock dump by far.

Early employees and investors will get their first chance to sell about 773 million shares, as well as another 31 million restricted stock units owned by employees who joined the company prior to 2011. Like many initial public offerings, Facebook’s May 18 debut included a “lockup” agreement that requires some shareholders from selling for a certain period.

While I’m still bullish on the stock long term (especially after their last earnings release with mobile monetization improvement), I’m still wary in the short term. It will be interesting to see how many shareholders will be selling tomorrow and in the next couple of weeks. And how the market reacts to that selling.

Looks like Facebook is doubling down on driving app installs to monetize their mobile inventory. I think they have a lot of potential here. The sheer volume together with social endorsements will be hard to beat.

This new design with more description, social proof, and ratings is a huge improvement too. Interested to hear how they work out for app developers.

Betting completely on HTML5 is one of the, if not THE biggest strategic mistake we’ve made.

This is a big loss for HTML5. Facebook doubled down on HTML5 and it came back to bite them. Now others will follow suit.

Separately, Zuck also said that Facebook will make a lot more per user on mobile than on the desktop in his first interview post-IPO. Investors were happy to hear it with the stock going up over 3% in after hours. Now they just need to do a lot more assuring.

Facebook Stock Price Target Cuts

Shares of Facebook (FB) are coming under pressure … as the stock receives a raft of cuts in price target, with BMO Capital, Stifel Nicolaus, and Merrill Lynch all offering targets in a range of $23 to as low as $15.

Merrill Lynch’s Justin Post, cutting his target to $23 from $35, writes “Facebook has multiple lock-up expirations over the next year (see Table 1) and recent selling activity on the August lock-up suggests to us the risk of future selling pressure. The biggest lock up date is 11/14 (40% of shares eligible for sale), and we wouldn’t expect stock to see buying momentum until December.”

As I was saying…

Again, while I do think Facebook will be a good stock in the long run (and Zynga for that matter — remember don’t count out the grasshopper), right now it is just very painful. The short interest and so many shares flooding the market means their share prices will stay down. As Post says above, you’re better off waiting for better prices until at least December. If not next summer.
