Is a Yahoo-Owned Tumblr More Attractive to Brands?

This is a great look at the deal from an ad agency perspective:

“It would give Tumblr an opportunity to expand their ad packages, and it certainly help them with the sheer organizational needs of ad sales,” said Paul Gunning, CEO of Tribal Worldwide.

This is a great point. Imagine that in 6-12 months, every Yahoo sales rep calling on a top Fortune 500 brand or agency can walk in and pitch Tumblr’s sponsored posts in addition to their regular media mix. The scale there will be immediately impactful. It will probably increase their sales team by a hundredfold. And importantly for users, it will lead to higher quality sponsored posts.

So I think this is a great move for all involved. Congrats to the whole Tumblr team. I really hope that we can believe Mayer when she promises ‘not to screw it up’.

Now you can do more than just reblog when you find something you love on Tumblr for iPhone and iPad.
Share posts via Twitter, Facebook, and more
Save stuff for later using Instapaper and Pocket
Email an entire post with our beautiful new template
Close photos by flinging up or down!
GIFs animate while you scroll*
Search your Following list (it’s now alphabetized and grouped by first letter!)
Download the update
*iPad 2, 3 and 4, iPad Mini, iPod Touch 5th Generation, iPhone 4S and 5 only

Love this update. Mostly for the Instapaper integration, which is where I do most of my reading.

Tumblr just keeps getting better and better for me.

It seems to me that this is native advertising as it should be. … The content is genuinely fun, just as it is fleeting and unobtrusive. … These are the sorts of native ad projects that help change some of the traditional polarity of the advertising and publishing relationship. This is where we really see marketers challenged by publishers on behalf of users to make their advertising more fun and engaging on the consumer’s terms.

MediaPost: Tumblr Brings Its Native Ad Format To Mobile

I tend to agree with this. Tumblr more than anyone else I’ve seen has nailed native brand advertising. The key is if they can keep challenging marketers like this (instead of taking the easier money).

Tumblr is still this mysterious animal to me. It’s not really a news reader. It’s not really a social network. It has a publishing and social dynamic all it’s own that feels different and rewards a different approach to posting and self expression.

A Fresh Start on Tumblr

This is the first post on my new blog. I’ve decided to switch from Posterous to Tumblr.

Why? Mostly because I like the simplicity.

My goal for this blog is to write original commentary on a frequent basis. The posts won’t be long and will be far from perfect. They will be shorter form posts with quicker thoughts (but longer than 140 characters, for that please see here) on technology news and products.

I also want to use Tumblr as its meant to be used as a network — quick sharing, lots of likes, re-blogging, images, etc. So expect to see more of that.

My second goal for this blog is to have more of a discussion and debate around the topics. So comments were very important to me. I’m a huge fan of Disqus for comments. Unfortunately Posterous never got on the Disqus bandwagon (despite the fact that they were both YC companies). Tumblr got on that train early and I commend them for it.

With Disqus, as a reader you’ll be able to comment using your Disqus, Facebook, Twitter or G+ identities. I will take the time to moderate. My hope is that a small group of people will participate in the discussion and hopefully one day we can have a real community. So please join in on the discussion with me.

So, here’s gordonbowman.com on Tumblr. I tinkered with a few themes and landed on this one. I like the design and the flow of it. Let me know if you have another similar one to recommend though. And if you have any great Tumblr blog recommendations, please shoot them my way.

As for all of my old content unfortunately Posterous doesn’t yet have a tool that lets you import old posts into Tumblr. So for now, I’ve auto-posted a few of my more popular posts for perpetuity sake. Sadly, most of the URLs that direct to previous posts will be broken. Nothing I could find to fix that except to go back and manually edit all links which just takes too much time.

Other than that, it’s a pretty clean slate. And I think that’s kind of nice. A fresh start.
