Mobile App Deep Linking

Fred Wilson on Twitter’s new Cards platform and “mobile app deep linking”:

Twitter announced some new functionality in its Twitter Cards platform yesterday. At the top of the list is “mobile app deep linking”. Here’s how Twitter explains it: With mobile app deep-linking, users will be able to tap a link to either view content directly in your app, or download your app, depending on whether or not they have your app installed.

Fred is right. This is a big deal.

There is no doubt that this is the next phase of mobile app advertising. Deep linking opens up so many possibilities for app developers. Deep linking to specials on in-app purchases for games, that one photo in your favorite photo sharing app, a box score in ESPN, a specific product page in e-commerce apps, etc. The list goes on.

And app developers will pay up for these deep link capabilities because it will allow them to drive more real transactions and monetize much better.

It’s still early but good to see more being done here. Props to Twitter for pushing this forward.

Twitter has revealed that the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games generated more than 9.66 million tweets, as the first day of the event went on to rack up more tweets than the entire 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Wild to think about how Twitter’s scale has grown globally in just four years.

Tumblr is still this mysterious animal to me. It’s not really a news reader. It’s not really a social network. It has a publishing and social dynamic all it’s own that feels different and rewards a different approach to posting and self expression.

This guy wants to build a better Twitter

Dalton Caldwell, the guy who built Imeem and now founder of App.net, wants to build a better Twitter.

Dalton recently wrote a post about what Twitter could have been and now he’s got an “audacious proposal” to fund a newer and better Twitter-like service that promises to always be open to developers and never put advertisers before users.

He’s now trying to raise $500k with crowdfunding and I think he might just be able to do it.

The question is, do enough people care enough to switch to a new Twitter? Especially one they have to pay for? To make the new service fun and useful it will need a critical mass of enough people. And I’d say the majority of folks are okay with the value exchange of having ads in their stream for the free service Twitter provides.

I do love all things audacious though. So I applaud Dalton for going for it and wish him the best of luck.
